ABSTRACT:
THE NEW PARENTAGE: OF FAMILIES, SEX AND ASEXUAL CHOICES. A work in progress, by Charles Kindregan, Jr., Distinguished Professor of Law, Suffolk University Law School, Boston. He is the co-author of a book on assisted reproduction (ABA 2006) and the chair of the ABA Committee on Assisted Reproduction and Genetics. Until a generation ago when collaborative reproductive technology came into use children were conceived by sexual intercourse. Today there are newer and still evolving forms of parenthood, influenced both by changes in society and by new forms of conception being pioneered by medical and reproductive science. This in turn has influenced our understanding both of the modern family and the parent-child relationship. Among the potential parents considered are genetic parents, gamete donors, embryo providers, intended parents, gestational surrogate mothers, birth mothers, posthumous parents, parenthood by estoppel and defacto parents. The impact of this on law and society must be considered.
